Douglas Brown // THE SPECTATOR

Off to the side I watch.

Unable to contribute.

Observing every shot and pass

every dodge and hit.

The longer I watch

the stronger the urge grows.

Then reminded, by the brace

restricting my elbow

no matter how bad I want to,

I can’t, not today or tomorrow

not until months later.

After becoming stronger

and overcoming the weakness

and the fears of being injured again.

When that day comes,

I will no longer be the spectator.
