I was sitting
on the bench by the field next to our school.
I leaned back and stared straight
up into the empty sky.
It was too empty.
Not a wisp of cloud marred
the perfect blue expanse above.
Something about that immense, unfeeling celestial
void unnerved me.
I felt as if I were adrift; bobbing
helplessly alone in the midst of a vast ocean.
There was only the pure blue color,
wildly piling over the top of my head.
