Julia Schwartz // I WAS SHATTERED

Everything was smooth

flowing

liquid.

Then time screeched to a halt,

jagged,

screaming,

hissing.

Like someone had hurled a boulder at the gears,

the rock jammed into an empty space

between the sharp fangs.

Sound stood still

for one, quick moment.

The gears began to shriek,

trying to grind past the barrier.

At first, the shrieking was

really,

really,

slow.

Then it was so fast I thought it would never end.

Everything was pounding,

it seemed like glass was smashing

and suddenly ––

it all stopped.

A pile of shards crumbled into dust

on the ground,

useless.

The broken version of me.

I didn’t think I would make it.

I was still there,

but I was shattered.
