Kaitlin L. // LONG BEACH

Waves break on the beach.

Outside the window gravel crunches

softly. Shadows cast by the rafters fall on

the bed sheets, which crinkle as someone

shifts in her sleep. Soft light peeks out from

under the shades pulled tight against the

sun. The small room sleeps all four of us

and fits two dressers. Space is tight but it’s

comfortable. A dog barks once. The scent of

freshly brewed coffee drifts upstairs. Dishes

clink in the kitchen. Our parents have

awoken. The day has begun.
