Matthew Tan // TOOTHPASTE

Once

crushed bones

with oyster shells

or

chalk, brick, and charcoal.

Today

a paste

repeatedly brushed against

to freshen

and prevent

unfortunate colored harm.

A chilling mint

of spears or peppers

in the cinnamon wintergreen

engraved at dawn

and

dusk.

Makes its journey

through the tusks

repelled out

into

a spiral of water

down endless

streams.
