Mei Pearlstein // THOUGHTS ON SPACE

I crave what the planets have

ever expanding

never running from time’s dizzying sway

always creating

and never waiting

for what was

No one knows

all there is to know

about space

you can count my freckles

but cannot count the stars

you can see my failures

but won’t ever see

the sun die

erupting into glorious flames

that cake humanity

with foreign ash and solar soot

possibly the universe’s biggest mistake

Yet all will be forgotten

wiped clean

pigmented

with new planets

leaving us

a distant memory

colliding into asteroids

breathing in the solar system

and feeling

what we could never

know.
